Wine Selection - June 2021

June 2021

This month, we've gone with a festive theme for Italy's National Day, "Festa Della Repubblica". Getting a special mention, our traditional sparkling white has been replaced with a sparkling red (serve chilled), a Siam Wine Club classic, the Pelofino "Super Tuscan", and one that deserves a little more fanfare, the Rosso Piceno DOC Superiore!

  • Riff Pinot Grigio DOC - Brilliant straw-yellow colour. A clean and elegant flavour, with hints of apples and peaches. The wine is light to medium-bodied with a fresh mouth-watering finish. Great as an aperitif or paired with salads, pâtés and terrines, and lighter meals such as fish and shellfish, pasta or risotto.

  • Verdecca - E' Arte IGT - Fresh, slightly acidulous with fruity notes. This wine is better drunk young, excellent as an aperitif or to accompany boiled or grilled fish, crustaceans and seafood.

  • Lambrusco - 'Marcello Gran Cru' - The first surprise in June's case is the Lambrusco Marcello. A fresh sparkling red wine, very well renowned, with an aromatic, soft and pure taste. Ranked among the top 10 wines from this region with respect to number of prizes won: Gold, Trophy from the International Wine Challenge was awarded as well as Gold from the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. As this is quite an intense wine we suggest pairing with cold cuts, patês, and rich pastas.
  • Pelofino Rosso - IGT - A Siam Wine Club favourite, the Pelofino has received good scores from various critics: the 2019 vintage was given a score of 90 by Raffaele Vecchione. It is a bright, ruby red wine with hints of fine cherry, ripe raspberry, and forest fruits on the nose. It is a very easy to drink wine, that isn't overly complicated and has a light tannin finish.

  • Nero di Troia - E' Arte IGT - A full bodied wine, with a great body, and robust, with sweet tannic notes. Perfect to match with BBQs, red meat, Sunday roasts, and ripe cheeses.

  • Rosso Piceno DOC Superiore - The second surprise in the June case, the Rosso Piceno Superiore is one of the most interesting D.O.C. Wines of central Italy. It's produced in a hilly area within the province of Ascoli Piceno and is made from Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes. This is an important, full-bodied wine capable of being kept for several years, but it is also characterized by a soft and pleasant taste, thanks to the ageing in oak casks. The ideal temperature for drinking is 18° c; its perfume is complex and structured, the flavour is ample and harmonious, improving with age.
